PostSubject: Vinaya Introduction   Fri Aug 16, 2013 5:05 pm

“Vinayo nama Buddha sasanassa ayu. Vinaye thite sasana thitam hoti”, if Vinaya stable eternally, Sasana stable eternally. Vinaya is lifeblood of Sasana and also discipline is for Sasana juniors. Therefore, after the Buddha pass away, in long time 3 months, Vinaya was record- memorized firstly by Venerable Kassapa Tera with his disciple who first Buddhist Council. In Vinaya was included by Bhikkhu Vibhanga, Bhikkhuni Vibhanga, Mahavagga, Culavagga and Parivara. However, at a later date, the following five books of Vinaya came to be defined, they are;
1 Parajaka pali
2 Pacittiya pali
3 Mahvagga pali
4 Culavagga pali
5 Parivara pali.
In them, Patimokkha is two kinds of Bhikkhupatimokkha and Bhikkhunipatimokkha. The training rules in the Patimokkha are composed of 4 Parajika(Defeat), 13 Samghadisesa(Formal meeting), 2 Aniyata(Undetermined), 30 Nissaggiya pacittiya(Forfeiture and confession), 92 suddha pacittiya(Confession), 4 Patidesaniya(Acknowledgment), 7 Adhikaranasamatha(Settlement of issues) and 75 Sekhiya(Training). By Apatti, there are seven in number as follow:
1 Parajika apatti = an offence involving defeat
2 Samghadisesa apatti = an offence entailing a formal meeting of the Order
3 Thullaccaya apatti = a grave / rude offence
4 Pacittiya apatti = Nissaggiya and Suddha
5 Patidesaniya = an offence that should be confessed
6 Dukkata apatti = an offence of wrong doing and
7 Dubbhasita = an offence of wrong speech.
Also by anupannatti are different into three types. They are;
1. Apattikara anupannatti = The supplementary regulation that has been promulgated and confirmed as offences
2. Anapattikara anupannatti = The supplementary regulation that is exempted from some offences and
3. Apattiupatthambhaka anupannatti = The supplementary regulation reaffirmed by the Buddha as offences.
Vinaya is very important for Sasana and Vinaya exists the Sasana exists. Therefore, The Buddha said thus, “Vinayo nama Buddha sasanassa ayu. Vinaye thite sasana thitam hoti” “If Vinaya stable eternally, Sasana stable eternally and Vinaya exists the Sasana exists.”
